Rebecca Ross Tombstone in Error

For many years the Barefoot Family Reunion laid claim to Colonel George Ross as the father of James Ross and grandfather of Rebecca Ross. Through that line they also claimed an indirect relationship to Betsy Ross - creator of the first American flag. Two researchers - Becky Barefoot and Sharon Sheldon - disproved that claim. The tombstone of Rebecca Ross still contains the incorrect information placed on the tombstone in 1962 by members of the reunion. The expense to remove it - estimated at around $700 - is more than the budget can withstand, so the motion to correct it is on the table. This is the old tombstone which is partially hidden by dirt in the Friends Cemetery in Pleasantville on Rt. 56 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.Rebecca Ross Tombstone in Error

We need to decide this year if we will remove erroneous information from Rebecca Ross’s tombstone. The inscription on Rebecca’s tombstone says mistakenly that she is the granddaughter of Col. George Ross, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. On finding Rebecca’s death certificate, two Barefoot family members discovered that her mother is listed as Ruth Ross.
On further investigation, they discovered that while Col. George Ross had a son named James, his son was married to Anna Maria Sabina Kuhn, and that James Ross and his wife would have been teenagers when Rebecca was born. Research identified Rebecca’s parents as James Ross and Ruth Robinson. None of the other connected lines—Wells, Brinley, or Rutter– claim to be descended from George Ross—only this James Barefoot line. In Aug. we must decide if we want to sandblast this information off the tombstone.
